Bystander Scenario 3.1

Scenario:

You walk into the dining room and see that Becca is sitting at a table rolling silverware. Tom is mopping the floors near her.

After a few moments you realize that Tom is mopping the same area repeatedly while frequently glancing at Becca. You also notice that Becca is intently staring at her task and actively avoiding catching Tom’s eye.

What do you do in this situation? (Select the response you most agree with)

A. You see that Becca is uncomfortable and you don’t like the way Tom is glancing at her. You also don’t like that he keeps mopping near her. You decide to interrupt the awkward silence to help Becca out of an uncomfortable situation.

B. You see that Becca is uncomfortable but think that Tom’s staring isn’t too bad. You believe Becca will get her job done quickly so she can leave. You decide to go back to your work in the kitchen and continue to listen just in case Becca needs your help.

C. You see that Becca is uncomfortable and you don’t like the way Tom keeps glancing at her. You think that getting involved might make the situation worse for Becca and decide to go back into the kitchen to avoid confrontation. However, you continue to listen intently just in case Becca needs your help.
