Bystander Scenario 1

Scenario:

You are working as a line cook in a California Restaurant. You stay late one night to get some prep work done for the next day. There are a few front-of-the-house workers who are also working late cleaning and rolling silverware. While you cannot see your coworkers, the restaurant is small enough that you can clearly hear their conversation.

You hear the male employee, Tom, asking the female employee, Becca tp go out with him and some friends..

Conversation:

Tom: “A few friends are getting together this weekend at the beach if you want to join.”

Becca: “Sounds like fun! I’m actually going to be busy all weekend but thanks for the invite!”

Tom: “That’s too bad. We’re going to have a bonfire with some food and drinks. Are you sure you can’t make it?”

Becca: “I’m sure. Thank you though. I hope you have a good time.”

As you are continuing to get your work done, you hear Tom once again asking Becca if she can make it to the get together.

What do you think of this situation? (Select the response you most agree with)

A. You don’t care what your coworkers do outside of work and try to tune out their conversation so you can finish your job and get home.

B. You feel bad for Becca but think Tom will probably give up soon.

C. You realize Tom hasn’t given up yet and begin listening more intently so you can assess whether or not Becca feels uncomfortable.
