Scenario Part 4.3

Scenario:

You continue working. You do not hear Tom or Becca talking for the remainder of the night. You finish up your work, clock out, and head out to your car. A few moments later you hear the door open behind you. You turn to see Becca has also left work and that Tom is still inside the restaurant. You and Becca get to your cars at the same time. You wave goodbye and leave before she does. You consider letting your supervisor know about the conversations you overheard tonight but decide against this. If Becca wants to report the situation, she will.

In this scenario you were a Passive Bystander. To be an Active Bystander, you could have taken the following actions:

  1. You could have been more Empathetic by deciding to pay attention to the situation sooner.
  2. You could have been more Aware by walking out of the kitchen to assess the situation and whether or not Becca needed assistance.
  3. You could have been more Confident by taking the initiative to interrupt the conversation and remove Becca from an uncomfortable situation.
  4. You could have been more Empathetic, Aware, and Confident by deciding to report the situation to your supervisor the next day.

While you are not required by any law to be an Active Bystander, it is highly recommended as a first line defense against potential Sexual Harassment Scenarios faced by yourself and/or your coworkers.
